New features and enhancements to COMET-Farm!

On December 8, 2017, the Natural Resource Ecology Lab at Colorado State University released an improved version of the COMET-Farm system. The improvements, which were developed over the course of two years, include the following:
  • Addition of twenty new specialty crops grown in California and other parts of the country. These include wine and table grapes, nut orchards, citrus varieties, lettuce and cole crops, strawberries, processing and fresh tomatoes, and an improved cotton crop. Including these crops expands the capacity to model conservation agriculture’s effect on reducing greenhouse gases from approximately 60% of California cropland to approximately 85% of California cropland.
  • The DayCent model was updated to the version used in the most recent USEPA national inventory, with added capacity to model orchard and vineyard systems and other woody crops.
  • The system has transitioned to a new and improved version of the PRISM daily weather model, providing better spatial resolution and weather modeling.
  • The NRCS SSURGO soil database has been updated to the latest version.
  • Multiple system improvements have been added to improve the user experience and facilitate data entry and model run interpretation.
  • Bug fixes and repaired system defects.
A second, associated upgrade is scheduled for Friday, December 15, when NREL will add uncertainty predictions for the greenhouse gas source categories in COMET-Farm, along with an improved implementation of the USDA “Blue Book” soil nitrous oxide model. The uncertainty predictions will be provided for all greenhouse gas source categories except soil organic carbon, which is scheduled to be added to the tool in January, 2018.
